Selling a car in Victoria isn’t as complicated as you might think, but there are a few important documents you’ll need to have ready — especially if you want the process to be quick and stress-free.

Whether you’re selling privately, trading it in, or handing it over to a car removal service like ours, having the right paperwork on hand can save you a lot of back-and-forth (and headaches). Here’s what you need to know.

1. Proof of Identity

Let’s start with the obvious — you’ll need to prove that you’re the legal owner of the car.

What you need:

  • A valid Victorian driver’s licence (or another form of government-issued photo ID)

The name on your ID should match the name on the car’s registration. If it doesn’t, be prepared to explain why — and bring any supporting paperwork.

2. Vehicle Registration Certificate (Optional but Handy)

This one isn’t strictly required, but if you still have your registration certificate, it makes the sale smoother.

It shows:

  • Your name and address
  • The vehicle’s VIN (Vehicle Identification Number)
  • Registration expiry date

This helps confirm ownership and reassures the buyer (or wrecker) that everything checks out. If you’ve lost it, don’t stress — we can still work with you. But it’s worth digging through your glovebox just in case.

3. A Signed Transfer of Ownership Form

In Victoria, when you sell a car privately, you need to complete a Vehicle Transfer form (aka the ‘Notice of Disposal’).

Here’s how it works:

  • Both you and the buyer fill out your sections
  • It includes details like buyer and seller names, licence numbers, and sale price
  • You both keep a copy
  • The buyer then lodges it with VicRoads within 14 days to complete the transfer

📝 You can download the form from the VicRoads website or pick one up at a VicRoads Customer Service Centre.

Note: If you’re selling your car to a licensed motor car trader or a wrecker (like us), we’ll usually handle this for you.

4. Roadworthy Certificate (For Private Sales)

If you’re selling your car privately and it’s registered, a Roadworthy Certificate (RWC) is required by law.

To get one:

  • The car needs to be inspected by a licensed tester
  • They’ll check things like tyres, brakes, suspension, lights, and emissions
  • If it passes, they’ll issue the RWC, which is valid for 30 days

🚫 Don’t want the hassle of a roadworthy?
Good news — you don’t need one if:

  • You’re selling the car to a wrecker or scrap yard
  • The car is unregistered
  • You’re transferring it to a spouse or domestic partner

We buy cars without roadworthy certificates all the time — it’s part of what makes our service easy and convenient.

5. Car Keys and Any Extras

Okay, it’s not technically a “document,” but don’t forget:

  • All sets of car keys (including spare keys if you have them)
  • The owner’s manual and service logbook (if still available)
  • Any receipts for recent repairs or upgrades — they can boost the car’s value

These little details can make a difference in how smooth the transaction goes and how much you get paid.

Don’t Let Paperwork Hold You Back

If all this sounds like a lot — don’t worry. Selling your car doesn’t have to feel like a government assignment. Especially when you sell to someone who knows the process and helps guide you through it.

At our end, we keep it simple. No need to stress over missing a logbook or not having a roadworthy. We’ll walk you through the process, explain what’s needed, and even help with the paperwork if you need a hand.

Selling your car in Victoria can be simple when you know what you need. With just a few key documents and the right buyer, you can turn that unwanted vehicle into quick cash — no fuss, no confusion.
And if you’d rather skip the roadworthy, the inspections, and the waiting? That’s where we come in. Give us a call and we’ll handle the rest.
